cancer gift tip
if you are struggling with a gift to give your bitter, angry cancer-filled friend, consider this book. i received dozens of pretty, pink blank journals after my diagnosis. i got little journals, big journals, hardcover journals, softcover journals. i got journals with hand-made paper. I got journals with bible verses in the margins. i got journals with women's quotes in the margins. i got it all! the thing is, i didn't open a single one. because the last thing i wanted to do in the midst of cancer treatment was WRITE ABOUT CANCER. i needed escapism, absurdity, and cathartic release. i wish i had this journal back then. it encourages slashing, burning, soaking, and spitting. i love it.
i know it is super hard to figure out what to do for a friend who has just been diagnosed. believe me, i was bewildered when my co-worker was diagnosed just a few days after i finished treatment. i didn't know what to do. flowers? cards? massage certificates? it all seemed a little hokey, and i had just finished treatment. so.... consider something like this book - something that acknowledges the fact that cancer is some serious bullshit.
if anyone needs a pretty pink perfumed blank journal, feel free to contact me. i have a stash.

I wanted to track down whoever came up with that and kick them in the teeth.
It was pink, of course.
